3.5 Course Recap
Each group is required to submit their 3-minute pre-recorded pitching videos.
This campaign aims to empower the Tanjung Bungah communities to participate actively in river basin management of Sungai Kelian. It is a process-oriented campaign towards creating a community-based riverine park. Through the campaign process, we strive to • strengthen the communities’ sense of ownership towards the river • enhance public awareness and appreciation of the river, and • connect the communities of Tanjung Bungah to other local communities with successful stories on community park/garden to facilitate knowledge-sharing and mutual support. The park's creation should create a platform for dialogue between local community and government agencies, such as local council and Department of Irrigation and Drainage. Ultimately a coalition of the important stakeholders, including both local community and government agencies could be formed for more effective river management, as a first step towards IRBM for Sungai Kelian.
The campaign starts with building understanding of the Sungai Kelian river system and its relationship with the locals. An exploratory walk and participatory workshop will be held to enable the participants to get to know Sungai Kelian from its physical location to its social, economical and ecological importance. Participants would also assess the current situation of the identified site for riverine park and identify their needs in engaging with the river. A riverine park task force would be formed among the participants to work closely on the campaign's further outreach and activities. Following the workshop, a series of community activities will be organised in response to the community's need. The activities would include picnic at the site, art activities, river clean up and site visit to model community park/garden. Next, a visioning exercise will be conducted for community members to put their ideas into the park design. It should also serve as a platform for exchange of thought and vision for river management. The plan will be published online for further outreach. A report on community observation on the park, their need and proposed plan for the riverine park would be submitted to government agencies for further dialogue.
