Ambiga Sreenevasan is brought on as a guest speaker for the YSEALI Boot Camp 2020 Phase 2 | Sparking Digital Action. The aim of her sharing session was to allow participants to hear from a prominent national and international Civic Leader. Through her experiences, successes, and troubles, participants gain an intimate understanding of what to expect in their journey towards Civic Engagement. This session sets to inspire and motivate participants by humanizing such prominent leaders and showing that their accomplishments are very much attainable. It also aims to develop the global thought leadership and community-centric mindset amongst participants. Ambiga Sreenevasan shares her experiences from working at the Malaysian Bar, leading the Bersih, and also shares her commentary on the current state of the society, within the context of civic engagement.

Ivy Josiah, being an experienced activist herself in the field of women’s empowerment and equal rights, provides her input on creating inclusive civic engagement campaigns. Utilizing the intersectionality framework, this session narrates how campaigns must consider the spectrum of oppression faced by marginalized communities. Through onboarding an inclusive approach, participants will be able to curate campaigns that holistically impact their communities and carefully consider all forms of discrimination faced by individuals.

The Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (MCCHR) is a non-partisan and not for profit organization. MCCHR aim's to provide an integrated approach towards the protection and promotion of human rights in Malaysia, doing so through prominent civic education programs. This session brought by the MCCHR team provides a deeper understanding of the relevant governing bodies and their power structures within Malaysia as a means to educate the youth on the various stakeholders within the ecosystem that they must consider in their civic engagement journeys. The lesson also showcases how community problems can be intimately analyzed by separating the root of the problem from the causes and the consequences. This strategy provides participants a framework to identify the true root causes of the problems they want to tackle, along with understanding how the community is truly affected as a result. By seeing the bigger picture and understanding the context of the issue, you will be able to decide on how to direct your campaign efforts in the right direction.

The primary challenge of organizing projects is the key management of all deliverables, resources, stakeholders relevant to achieving success in a timely manner. This session discusses the various elements and digital tools that can be used in project management to ensure the participants are able to efficiently manage all tasks relating to the project’s implementation. The skills provided this lesson are also transferable for any future initiatives and or campaigns that the participants may undergo. We aim to provide the necessary infrastructure to the teams in order to successfully formulate and implement their campaigns.

Dr Hartini is a prominent child rights activist and also a fundraising consultant. She is the co-founder of Yayasan Chow Kit and served as the Head of Advocacy and Funding. This lesson covers one of the most important aspects of campaigning and civic engagement, fundraising. The ability to share your compelling story and be able to reach out to influential entities to raise funds is paramount to running a successful campaign. While money is not an important aspect when considering community impact, when used appropriately, it enhances the intended impact of your campaigns. Participants will receive first-hand insights from an industry leader in being able to design a fundraising strategy to procure capital and on managing and allocating said funds to run a campaign on limited resources.

Participants are provided with an understanding of how media can be manipulated to fit an alternative agenda. In the digital age, with the influx of content posted on the internet today, it has become increasingly difficult to know what your reading or seeing is accurate. The ability to consciously consume verified content is extremely valuable in the 21st century as it allows you to be well informed and educated on relevant matters. What does it mean when intentionally fabricated content is spread as fact? Why should we care about it? Ian Yee from R.AGE shares why this is an important element in your campaign and how to decipher fake news from actual news.

Undi 18 is a Malaysian grassroots movement spearheaded by Qyira Yusri and Tharma Pillai to lobby for equal rights and opportunities for the Malaysian Youth. In this session, Undi 18 focuses on the importance of identifying and recruiting key individuals and organizations with influence who believe in the cause. Being passionate about creating societal impact is extremely important. However, if you are unable to measure your efforts and showcase the actual quantifiable impact you have created, it will be extremely difficult to know if your campaign has been successful or not. Me.reka focuses exactly on that in this session. Key tools are shared with participants to successfully analyze and baseline the intended impact of the campaigns. By using the provided tools, they are then able to indicate what success means to their campaign and how they will measure it. Impact reporting is a valuable aspect in any campaign as it allows you to understand your performance, improve your operations, and also receive further support from external stakeholders.
